radionuclide cisternography

Both computed tomographic (CT) cisternography and radionuclide cisternography require lumbar puncture for the Radionuclide cisternography has poor sensitivity and poor spatial resolution. Radioactive iodine (131I) serum albumen, technetium (99mTc)-labeled serum albumen and DTPA, and indium-111 pentetate have all been used for radionuclide cisternography, which involves the intrathecal administration of a radionuclide tracer via a lumbar puncture and subsequent monitoring of the distribution of tracer with a scintillation camera. Because radionuclide cisternography requires active CSF flow for the documentation of a CSF leak, the tech- nique of overpressure radionuclide cisternography (ORNC), which incorporates a constant tracer infusion to increase the intrathecal pressure and thereby enhance flow, may increase the sensitivity of radionuclide cisternography.60 In practice, the utility of radionuclide cisternography has been limited by the poor spatial resolution of the scintillation cameras. For instance, even under the best of circum- stances, a radionuclide cisternography has notoriously poor spatial resolution.
